Bird and Bat Boxes

In addition to a wide variety of resident and migratory birds, our park (which is also a local nature reserve) is also home to two species of microbats - the common pipistrelle bat and soprano pipistrelle bat.

Recently our grounds maintenance team has been working to install more bird and bat boxes throughout the park, in order to provide safe shelter and nesting sites for them, while also helping to boost the park’s biodiversity.

Installation of bird and bat boxes is beneficial for both wildlife and the environment:

  •  Provides shelter and nesting sites: Many bird and bat species are losing natural nesting and roosting sites due to habitat loss and human development. Bird and bat boxes offer safe and secure alternatives.

  • Increases biodiversity: By providing additional nesting and roosting opportunities, bird and bat boxes can help increase the populations of various species, contributing to a healthier ecosystem.

  • Pest control: Bats are natural predators of insects, including many agricultural pests. By providing bat boxes, we can encourage their presence and help reduce the need for chemical pesticides.

  • Pollination: Some bat species are important pollinators, especially for certain plants that bloom at night.

  • Seed dispersal: Birds play a crucial role in seed dispersal, helping to regenerate forests and other natural areas.

  • Educational opportunities: Bird and bat boxes can provide opportunities to observe wildlife and learn about their behaviours and ecological roles.

Overall, installing bird and bat boxes is a simple yet effective way to support wildlife conservation and enhance the biodiversity of our local environment - something we are greatly invested in here at Parc Bryn Bach.

Here are some examples of the varied bird and bat boxes that we have installed around Parc Bryn Bach.
